Acupuncture has gained recognition as mainstream care, and so has its visibility and liability exposure. Over the past decade, an increasing number of acupuncturists have been the subject of malpractice lawsuits related to patients’ alleged injuries.

As a doctor-owned company that insures acupuncturists as well as physicians, we are keenly interested in helping acupuncturists reduce their liability exposure. There are specific steps that acupuncturists can take to prevent claims, and MIEC can help. Once approved for coverage, each acupuncturist receives a copy of MIEC’s “Claims prevention for acupuncturists,” a guidebook on claims prevention.

Answers to general professional liability questions. We encourage acupuncturists to use our loss prevention professionals as a resource when they have general professional liability questions. We can respond to a host of issues, among them: medical records management – when to release and how long to retain; how to safely withdraw from patient care; and how to effectively obtain and document informed consent.
Helpful practice materials. Policyholders also can get useful forms and templates for their practice, sources of California statutes applicable to the practice of acupuncture, and links to acupuncture-related websites.
