Basic Coverage

MIEC provides professional liability insurance under a claims-made contract. We cover individual physicians, physician groups, and facilities (freestanding diagnostic and surgical outpatient facilities, urgent care centers, emergency contract groups, community clinics, blood banks) in California, Hawaii, Idaho and Alaska. MIEC offers a choice of liability limits: $500,000 each claim/$1.5 million annual aggregate, $1/$3-million and $2/$4-million. Higher limits may be available for individual physicians and for physician group entities. Call MIEC for details and a quotation.

The MIEC policy protects physicians:

  • Against claims alleging injury or damage caused by delivering or failing to deliver direct health care services to patients;
  • When acting as an independent medical examiner
  • When providing advice or consultation regarding the health of persons who are not patients
  • For peer review activities

Other legal defense expense coverage: The MIEC basic policy also provides for up to $25,000 in legal defense expense for investigations, civil lawsuits, or administrative proceedings by a state licensing agency; by a state or federal agency that acts to terminate your right to provide service under a government-funded program; or for claims alleging unlawful discrimination or harassment, assault, battery, or malicious prosecution (other than claims brought on by an employee).

Premises liability: MIEC also can provide coverage for premises liability – arising from injuries to or damage to the property of the public at your professional office premises. Limits of liability under the premises liability coverage are $1,000,000 per claim/$3-million annual aggregate for bodily injury; and $100,000 each claim and annual aggregate. Premises liability coverage extends to third-party bodily injury or property damage from an accident arising out of the use of a vehicle (not owned, rented or leased to the physician) by an employee on employment-related tasks. Limits under this section are $100,000 for bodily injury, $25,000 property damage liability.

(All coverage provided by MIEC is subject to the specific limits of liability, terms and conditions, including exclusions and specific warranties, endorsements and declarations of the actual policy issued to each insured. The preceding summary is necessarily incomplete. It does not replace, expand or rescind any portion of the actual insurance contract that MIEC issues to a specific policyholder.)
