All insurance policies have exclusions to coverage. They may apply to the
indemnity portion of the coverage only, or to both defense and indemnity. Some
may be modified or removed to adapt to particular practices or procedures.
Review a sample policy to read exclusions before you purchase coverage An
attractive rate might provide a policy with unacceptable limitations.
Common exclusions relate to performance of surgery, certain invasive
diagnostic procedures, or obstetrics. Understand the exclusions and be sure they
don't leave any of your practice activities uncovered.
Also check the policy conditions, which spell out your rights and obligations.
As an example, if you are a family physician and you opt to give up surgery or
obstetrics while insured, make sure that the malpractice carrier will still
cover claims reported in the future from the discontinued surgical or
obstetrical practice. If it doesn't, you have a serious uninsured risk.
