We were founded in 1975 by doctors to serve doctors and it’s still that way today. As a member-owned company, we are not satisfied with treating you as just a policyholder—you are an owner of our organization. Here are some of the reasons to choose us.
We have low and stable rates.
We recognize cost is a key factor in choosing malpractice insurance. That is why we only charge members enough each year to pay for expected claims, legal defense and operating expenses. Our rates are fair, consistent and transparent.
We have very low overheads.
The expenses to run MIEC are consistently lower than other insurance companies. In 2009, MIEC's underwriting expense ratio was 23% lower than the industry average (15.8% vs. 20.5%)
We have no profit motive.
We have no outside investors or owners and thus, no requirement to make a profit from the insurance business. If results are better than predicted by our actuaries, we return the excess to policyholders in the form of dividend credits. Our history and philosophy in this regard makes us unique amongst insurance carriers.
We are doctor owned and governed.
An elected Board of 15 physicians oversees and approves all operational issues, including rates and underwriting rules. Physician committees meet regularly to review and decide on operational matters.
We are focused and responsive.
Our business is to protect policyholders. More than half our staff members have at least 10 years experience in their field. Our culture is to be responsive, service-oriented, and to avoid the impersonal inflexible behavior you may have experienced with other insurers.
We are successful.
We have now resolved over 28,000 malpractice claims and lawsuits reported by our policyholders over the past 35 years. In that time period, we have consistently closed almost 90% with zero indemnity monies paid to plaintiffs—or their attorneys.
We reduce risk.
We are leaders in identifying and communicating state of the art risk management techniques. As a policyholder, you can request a complementary onsite survey of your practice at any time to help identify ways to reduce your liability risk and improve your chances of prevailing if you are accused of medical negligence.
We are strong.
MIEC has been in business for over three decades. We have earned one of the highest financial ratings issued in the industry (A- {Excellent} Rating from AM Best). We will be here for you in good times and bad.
