Free Continuing Medical Education for MIEC Members

Published on:

As an added benefit to membership, MIEC offers Continuing Medical Education (CME) at no cost to members through our partnerships with Empathetics, Inc. and Med-IQ.

MIEC’s free online CME is a great way for member physicians to work towards annual CME requirements while learning skills to enhance their interactions with patients, maximize patient safety, and reduce liability.

MIEC members can complete one, or both, of the Med-IQ and Empathetics programs to earn up to 8 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Empathetics:

Negative consequences of uncompassionate communication threaten the effectiveness of the overall healthcare experience for patients and their families. Groundbreaking research through a randomized controlled trial conducted at the Massachusetts General Hospital demonstrated that empathy training can significantly improve the patient experience.

Developed from this research, the Empathetics program offers proven, trademarked training based on the neurobiology and physiology of human interactions.

Key learnings from the Empathetics program include:

  • The value and practice of empathy based on the neuroscience of emotion
  • The link between patient satisfaction and higher U.S. H-CAHPS and CG-CAHPS scores
  • How to increase effectiveness and efficiency with patients
  • How best to convey difficult news effectively and compassionately
  • How to provide interpersonal and inter-professional feedback constructively
  • How to decode emotional facial expressions in others
  • How to distinguish true empathy from misguided empathy

The Empathetics eLearning program consists of three self-paced, interactive course modules that provide instruction and practice in the science of emotional connections.

  • Video vignettes enhance appreciation of others’ implicit emotional states.
  • Exercises teach how to detect and manage patients’ feelings and how to respond with empathy and compassion, even in difficult interactions.
  • The program also provides self-management skills and specific techniques that can be easily incorporated into daily routines.

Participants are eligible for a total of 3 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ upon completion of the Empathetics program.
