As the work of healthcare professionals continues to evolve with new procedures, new regulations and crafty plaintiff attorneys, it is important for members to know how MIEC is protecting you. This session will aim to educate attendees about the contents and benefits of their insurance policy. The presenters will provide an in-depth overview of the MIEC policy including its structure, coverage and key features. In addition to examples of how coverage is triggered, attendees will also hear about what they should do and how MIEC responds when an actual lawsuit has been filed.

Session Objective:

  • To highlight the importance of understanding policy details to avoid surprises during claims and to utilize the policy effectively, even without a claim.

Emerging Cyber Trends and Exposures.  How Can You Protect Your Practice?

The frequency and severity of Ransomware cases have increased steadily since 2018, with ransom demands increasing on average over 400% in that time. With daily headlines, including the Change Healthcare cyber-attack, healthcare practices are at a crossroads as to how to approach protecting their digital assets, and insurers are working quickly to devise sustainable solutions.  There is reason to be optimistic as risk mitigation and breach prevention tools are becoming more prolific, but healthcare providers should stay vigilant and proactive with cyber hygiene, rather than depend solely on insurance protection. 

This session explores ways to protect healthcare practices from cyber-attack and features guest contributors from the FBI’s Honolulu field office & Cyber Security & Infrastructure Security Agency.

Medical Malpractice Claims and Litigation in Hawaii: Recent Hawaii Cases and Trends

MIEC leaders in claims handling and risk management, along with an experienced malpractice defense attorney, will share insights from actual cases brought against Hawaii healthcare providers.
 
You will learn about historical, recent, and anticipated trends in medical negligence claims in Hawaii.  A discussion of actual cases brought and litigated to conclusion will provide insight as to what created risk for the physicians, as well as what factors assisted in the defense of the case.
 
There will be an overview of the lawsuit process and how the physician can best assist his or her attorney in that process and assist themselves.
